EAT PALM BEACH | THAICOON

Thaicoon is an unassuming Thai restaurant located on Northlake Blvd near US1. The decor is simple, but the food is tasty with nice portions. A departure from the usual lunch spots, I visit Thaicoon every few weeks or so to get my Thai fix. On this particular day, my mom and I grabbed a quick lunch between meetings (Thaicoon is one of her favorites).

We started with the Steamed Dumplings which are like a pork meatball wrapped in shiu mai or wonton wrapper and steamed. It was served with a thick glaze that had a nice sweet flavor. The presentation was really pretty but I wasn’t too thrilled with them to be honest. I had a cup of the Wonton Soup though I actually prefer their Chicken and Rice Soup which is especially good when sick.

Next we had the Red Curry with Chicken which is served with steamed white rice. It has a blend of vegetables and a nice creamy texture. You can choose your level of heat, though I always go “1 star.” They have a variety of curries available – red, green (it gets its color from the coconut milk base mixed with Thai basil and green chillies), Panang (generally a milder curry), Choo Chee (usually a thicker curry, similar to red) – with your choice of mixed vegetables, tofu, chicken, pork, beef, shrimp or squid. They don’t have massaman curry which is my favorite, but I like the red curry quite a bit.

For dessert we had the Fried Bananas which are sliced bananas in a spring roll wrapper, fried and topped with honey. They are simple but hot, sweet and delicious.

Thaicoon has been around for a while, so the locals have spoken in terms of their food. The atmosphere is okay and the service is usually pretty solid, so if you like Thai it’s definitely a spot to check out.
